My mother had an out of body experience at the age of 16 while bleeding-out when she gave birth to me. After many pints of blood, they got her back and she later told the medical staff of their conversations and actions while she was 'clinically dead'.
16 years later, I had a similar experience in an ambulance after a horrific car wreck.
So I think there is a consciousness or spirit or soul that is still around after our physical body stops living.

In the case of near death experiences I think that our souls, or spirits hang around because they realize that it is not time for them to move on. They watch the experience so as to be able to look back and remember upon as a sort of a confirmation. I have read that their is a cord of light of somesort that connects the spirit to the body. When it is truly your time to go, then the cord is broken and the spirit is truly free to go to the other side.

There are books written by Ray Moody telling about thousands of people he interviewed who had Near Death Experiences. People from all different countries, cultures and religions had similar experiences. Most of them started with seeing their dead body. Very few people reported negative experiences.
