I am thinking about moving to a house that has potential but the neighbers houses are cluttered with junk everywhere and some of the tenants look really rough. I want to make sure Im not putting my children at risk. So I ask you guys is there a way to find out if the tenants who are listed there have a crimal background or sex offences?

why in the world would I be considered shallow? For your information once a sex offender always a sex offender. If a sicko rapes a child, i'm sorry but they are more than likely to commit it again. I'm not wrong for wanting to know whos in the neighborhood before moving there. Its pure ignorance that keeps sex offenders around.

It's good for a parent to be alert to such things and to want to do whatever you can to insure the safety of your children. The other answerers told you where you can find the information you seek, so I won't duplicate it. Keep in mind though that sex offenders residency lists are not always up to date. You may discover that there is an address in your zip code that is a published address of a sex offender - it may be current and accurate or the offender may have already moved or be back in custody somewhere. And don't be over confident if you find that no offenders are listed for your area, because an offender list won't tell you where they visit, who their friends are, and where they may show up during the day during their travels. And lastly, there are even more sex offenders out there who have not been caught, or have not registered, or have not been convicted yet, that can be literally anywhere....and one cannot tell who they are by how they look or the looks of their home. Be a good parent and look up the information you seek, but keep a good perspective on what it tells you and doesn't tell you, and continue to give guidance to your children regardless of what the list shows. One reason offenders are so successful, is because they are very convincing that they are trustworthy and normal and do not fit a stereotype image of how we think they should look.

Watchdog.org It shows who is a sex offender. Oprah had this on her show. I checked it out and cannot believe how many live in my area. Remember two things. Even guys who had sex at 18 with their 17 year old girlfriends are called sex offenders. AND remember that most sex offenders that are truly sicko , don't get caught. If it were me, I would have the guts to walk up to the neighbors and just ask them what they know about the house you are looking at and try to get a good impression of what these people are about. Ask them all kinds of stuff. You will know.

Many states/counties/cities have programs online listing sexual offenders addresses/names, ect.
The best thing for you to do is to call your local municipal city or county court system to see what is avaible to you. Also check with the state if your city or county does not have a list.
Furthermore, if there is no list, be an activist, write to the mayor, governer, ect. There needs to be a list of these predators for you and your kids protection. Some even offer violent criminals names/addys too.
Email me at fireheart81@comcast.net if you need help.

Megan's Law, the federal version, was enacted on May 17th, 1996. Megan's Law mandates that every state develop a procedure for notifying residents of sex offenders residing there. Each state differs on how they report the information, but the National Alert Registry has combined all of the state's information in to one easy-to-use database.

Check with the local police. Sometimes they pass out fliers or post them on their website. Sex offenders are supposed to be recorded.

Check your state's law enforcement website. There is usually a list of registered sex offenders and their addresses there.
