How does a self cleaning oven work exactly?

Domestic self clean ovens have been around since about 1967. Through the years there have been various ways of setting and controlling the process. The basic operation has not changed however. The oven gradually heats up to 550degrees F. and the door is locked so it cannot be opened until it drops below 550 F. again. It continues to heat until it reaches 950 degrees F. At that temperature any food spatters or spills are burned off leaving a grey ash behind. The time for the self clean cycle is usually about 4 hr. and the oven shuts itself off at the end of that time. It can take up to 1hr. for the oven to cool sufficiently to allow the door to unlatch and the door to be opened.

A self cleaning oven generates a lot more heat than the highest oven temp setting. This is why there is a locking mechanism so you cannot open the oven while it is in cleaning mode. The self cleaning oven on my stove generates heat to around 900º. It burns and chars the food residue until it turns to ash. Once cooled, you only need to wipe it out to clean it.

You click the self cleaning oven button. It automatically goes up to about 500 degrees and it supposedly lock up --you turn a flap on it or something--all stoves are different. But basically you hit that button and it goes up to that high temperature and then it lasts for awhile and automatically kicks off when it is finished. After it is clean, you still have to wipe stuff out of the bottom.. Those type of ovens are nice to have.

Very high heat, like over 800 degrees. You'll set the oven to the self clean cycle (remove the racks if you don't want them to get discolored), then the oven will lock shut and get very, VERY hot. After the cycle is over, and the oven cools down, you'll wipe out the ashes with a damp sponge.

I wouldn't recommend doing this right now with as hot as it is in most of the country...this will seriously heat up your kitchen!!!
