Butterfly would be more benificial for working out your abs. To do it correctly, you must use your whole body, including your core (abs & back included). It is not just moving your arms & legs.
If you really want to work on your abs, try doing dolphin kick on your back or side. Make sure that you are using your whole body starting with your head. If you are doing it correctly, you should feel it in your abs.

While they're both great work outs, butterfly is better for the lower abs. The reason for this being that the butterfly kick is supposed to start from your abs not your hips like with freestyle. The down side to fly though, is that it is harder to do and you will get tired much faster. A swim set my coach constantly gives me and kicks my butt every time is, 15 100's, (4 laps in a 25 meter pool), the first 3 laps are free and then the last is fly. It works well because the free allows you to work other muscles while still having to do fly and work your abs. Plus its at the end of the 100 so you begin to get tired and have to work harder to pull your self out of the water.

Answer above me is definitly wrong it is a very good work out because either way you work everything!
both are really good but i think that the butterfly is better for the lower abs because the freestyle like you say depends on your arms and legs alot more. and with the butterfly you have to do more then just stroke and actually life more then just your head out of the water. i believe if i remember correctly regulations and perfections is bringing your body half way out of the water with each stroke down to the middle of your back, if i remember correctly. But either way if your doing laps, a good way to exercise is to do all of the laps so that your working everything so every time you flip (turn around) you change them up that's how i used to practice at home. Good Luck!!!

I would say no. Butterfly is better for all the back muscles and shoulders however free-style is a more all over body workout including core (abs)

actually butterfly you work out your biceps. you need a lot of strength to do butterfly. butterfly, unfortunately, is much harder than free. i don't remember which stroke works out one's lower abs, but i do know that if you do a lot of crunches, you can work out your lower abs. swimming works out your whole body, so i think there are strokes that help your lower abs.

No. Work out is more effective, especially, Yoga - if you know how to do it scientifically. Butterfly style swimming or swimming per say, is very good to keep yourself fit, but, if you want to shape up your body, there is no substitute of work outs.

Butterfly, b/c you have to move differently more like a dolphin and put your whole body into it, whereas freestyle is more arms and legs with just hte rolling of the hips.
