It wasn't until 1977 that the songwriter in Collins emerged, and some of his songs tell a personal story that he is reticent to discuss. Apparently, his first wife„ Andrea, took up with another man because Collins was too involved with his career. In "In the Air Tonight," he sang: "I was there and I saw what you did./ I saw it with my own two eyes. /So you can wipe off that grin, / I know where you've been, /It's all been a pack of lies." Whatever the details, Collins poured out his feelings in songs that became his first solo album, "Face Value." It was a raw emotional testament

the song is like art...you can hear it and it'll mean different things to different people. what i get out of it is that he's singing about someone who he has a history with that includes betrayal, anger and pain. on the outside, he's tellin' this person~i've been burned by you once...and it won't happen again...I see your true colors, now. i get the feeling that he's rose above this, but it still leaves a bitter taste in his memory. (like that answer?)

I think he's talking about getting stuck in traffic after work and not being able to get home to ask/answer any yahoo questions. This might be very upsetting!!

I LOVE YOU BABY!!

It sounds like he's talking to someone who has done him wrong.

When he says,"Well if you told me you were drowning, I would not lend a hand".

Sounds like he's pissed with someone, and he doesn't trust them.
