There is no synonym for synonym. The above word examples are only partially correct. Synonym has been passed down from the Greek. It literally means "same word." Look it up in your dictionary and thesaurus. He wants to know if you understand it I think. Tell the prof synonymous...but that is the adjective form

The word does NOT have to have EXACTLY the same meaning in all uses -- it just has to be able to be used for the word in SPECIFIC cases (where it is "synonymous"... communicating the same idea).

So, in certain contexts, instead of synonym, you could use:

equivalent OR substitute


DEFINITION of "synonym":
1.A word having the same or nearly the same meaning as another word or other words in a language.
2. A word or an expression that serves as a figurative or symbolic substitute for another.

So tichur is mistaken -- a word's meaning is NOT the "literal meaning" of the Greek roots that make up the word, but the meaning of the ENGLISH word as used today.
