Feast of the Three Saviours in August
Yesterday, August 29, was the Feast of the "Third Saviour" which the Orthodox Church celebrates in August.
There are three such Feast Days in August: August 1/14 is the Procession of the Life-Giving Cross of the Merciful Saviour and the Mother of God. It commemorates the anniversary of the Baptism of Kyivan-Rus' by St Volodymyr.
On this day, the Feast of the Maccabean Martyrs, their mother, Salomia, and their Elder, Eleazar, is also commemorated. These were Hebrews who died rather than break the Mosaic Fast laws. "Maccabee" means "hammer" and this was the name of the Hebrew Insurgents fighting against their Syrian-Greek masters. The Orthodox Church recognizes the three Books of the Maccabees as inspired Scripture, the Roman Catholic Church only the first two, and the Protestants not one.
On this Feast of the Saviour, poppy-seed is blessed and then kept for the "kutia" for the three Holy Suppers of the Christmas season. The Ukrainian Church linked the Ukrainian word for poppy-seed or "mak" with the name of the "Makobees." The blessing of the poppy-seed on this day was such a specifically Ukrainian tradition that there were incidents of Poles trying to prevent Ukrainians from doing this. As Taras Shevchenko wrote in a poem, "And on the Feast of the Makobee, they didn't even allow us to bless the Mak, those Poles . . ."
The second and greatest of the feasts of "St. Saviour" or "Sviatoho Spasa," is that of the Holy Transfiguration of Christ on August 6/19. This Feast gives us a foretaste of the Divinization or Theosis that Christ came to allow us to participate in. Fruit and honey is blessed on this day as all nature is transfigured in Christ and becomes a vessel ready to impart Divine Grace to us.
This is also a harvest festival, therefore. Since Peter suggested that tents be put up for Christ, Moses and Elias, the Syrian Churches call this feast after its Jewish predecessor holiday, the "Feast of Tabernacles." Like the Jews, Assyrians set up tents outside and spend time in prayer in them on this day!
The third feast of "St Saviour" occurred yesterday and marks the transfer of the Mandylion from Edessa to Constantinople.
