First off to the lady who lets her son have diet cola, honey please don't give that to him anymore. It has artifical sweetner in it which his under developed kindeys, and other organs can not handle. It is a man made chemical that is currently in several lawsuits for causing birth defects in babies of pregnant women who drank it, and it is known to cause cancer. In CA the FDA made makers of products like nutra-sweet and (can never spell this one) asparmate put on the packaging that it can cause cancer. University of Michigan tells it's pregnant patients to not drink any nutrasweet or asparmate (diet sweetners that are man made), and also tells parents to not let their children ever drink it.
Now, the question at hand about age and drinking soda is a good one. Parents aganst tooth decay and sweets will say don't do it. Parents against giving your kid gas and gas pain will say don't do it. Dentists who fix rotted kids teeth will say never let them even start to like it, give them water instead or a healthy non acidic and non sweetened drink. (yay leaves water)...
Eitherway, drinks (sips) and taste tests will happen, just make sure your kid is old enough to swallow on it's own, and if it has teeth brush them afterwards OR rinse his/her mouth with some water. Next, if baby has no teeth, you should swab his gumline with a warm damp cloth after his sip. This will help prevent decay from his teeth that are close to erupting.
One thing you do no matter what anyone says, is do not give your infant or toddler any caffinated drinks. Their kidneys and liver are not mature enough yet to handle the caffene very well. It has a lot of bad side effects for growth (brain growth, height, etc). Fake sweetners, and caffene (sp?) are not good for adults or kids. But especially keep them away from the kiddies.
Don't let the baby drink to much, he might be to young to know how to fart or belch easy to relieve any gas pressure from the soda (and it doesn't take much soda to create a LOT of bubbles in a sensitive tummy).

I wouldn't ever give it to my child. Especially a baby. For what? I have an infant now, but even my other kids, ages 5 and 10 never drink soda. They drink mostly water or milk, and at dinner I give them juice.
The only time they ever get soda would be if we go out to eat or something. But if they are under 2 or 3, no way. Kids are obese and have cavaties because of soda and parents who aren't teaching them what is healthy eating and what is not.

I don't think there is a real answer to this because soda isn't good for anyone. But.... I used to catch my grandma giving it to my kids when they were babies. Probably around a year would be when she would start this and royally piss me off. The point, it didn't hurt them but that was just sips. The rules in our home are no soda except when we go out to eat or occasionally on family movie night but always never any caffeine. So, they are allowed stuff like sprite, orange soda, and root beer. Caffeine keeps their bones from absorbing calcium and their bodies from absorbing vitamin c.

I don't know if it's ok but my fiance started letting our youngest sip his soda at about 8 or 10 months. He's now 2 and is allowed to drink once in awhile.

If you can keep a child from drinking soda it is best. But my little girl had problems with her stomach and I gave her root beer before she was 5 months old. But after 5 years of age is best. and then only caffinee free soda.

Soda is nothing but sugar, carbonated water, color and some flavor. Why would you want to even introduce that to your child? Have you not seen how obese our youth have become because of overconsumption of products like soda? Don't give your kid any soda. Water, some juice and milk are fine.

Why would you want to give your child soda in the first place? Soda isn't good for anyone.

Instead of soda, consider giving a mixture of carbonated water and juice. It is better for children and can be given at any age.

Soda is NOT a suitable drink for a child of any age.
It does not have any nutritional value at all, and can spoil their appetite for real food.
Think about it.... do you really want to start your child on a junk food habit?
