Mazda, or any car for that matter, is safe depending on your driving habits. If you 'tailgate',or try to pass on a double yellow line, or drive recklessly, it is as dangerous as any other car.
If you enjoy your Miata, drive responsibly. Always keep your eyes panning as much as possible, watching what's behind, one each side and in front of you.

PS I know you're looking for crash test results, but avoiding crashes is the objective

If you're engine is the 1.6L like I think it is, you need a B6 - family engine - that is the 1.6 L four that went into a number of different Mazdas, some Fords, and a couple Mercury's from that era. The 1.8 won't work since that's an all new- spacing. Don't know why you would want to save just the head when you can swap a whole used engine in for no real extra money - save the other head if you like! However, if you're looking to replace blocks, I'd strongly suggest going with a 1.8 liter, just for the added power/torque over the 1.6 - the BP engine was the DOHC version that went into the Miata. The changes are minimal to run it (you would need to swap the ECM in - however, finding a solid donor should be fairly simple.

Everyone is talking like they know something, when they no NOTHING at all about the crash worthiness of a Miata. There is a youtube video showing NO passenger compartment intrusion in a 35 mph head on collision with a reinforced brick wall, with a first gen. 90-97 Miata. The top comment is from someone who just went through a 50mph head on collision with an SUV, and is commenting on youtube 4 days later. Think and research before you rattle off your lack of knowledge.

Seeing as the Mazda Miata is a very small, compact vehicle it probably isnt very safe if you get into an accident. You are most likely going to go injured if you get hit on the drivers side, or you are hit head on.

Compared to a more modern Miata, they are not nearly as crashworthy & don't handle or brake as well. I had a 2001 & really liked it, but now have a 2006 GT and it's much better than the 2001 (more solid). Try to get the newest one you can afford.

Like all small tiny cars, it has a small tiny frame and little protection for the driver. You wreck, your gonna get hurt. You roll, your dead.

IT DOES NOT MATTER HOW SAFE THE CAR IS. IT IS THE DRIVER THAT MATTERS. IF YOU ARE A SAFE DRIVER, THEN YOUR MIATA IS TOO.
