It'll never happen.

I know this because I took two Geology courses in college. The fault lines run kind of horizontally, not vertically.

Eventually, the cities of San Francisco and LA will be right beside each other--but California will NEVER, NEVER, NEVER break off from the US. It's geologically impossible.

They'd just simply build a bridge to relink California back with the rest of the US. But more than likely they'll build it in such a way that you could add more sections to the bridge in the future, so if Cali starts drifting away, they can keep modifying the bridge.

Otherwise, boats/planes to reach it again.
