I usually give the kids I babysit easier games if they're around that age. Matching games are great, especially if it'll teach them new words since they might just be learning to read. When I was younger I had a game called "Memory" - it was quite nifty. If you're looking for more board-gameish type things, go with Chutes and Ladders or Operation.

Check out Discovery Toys for games like Zingo, What's Gnu, A to Z jr. All are educational and lots of fun for that age range!

Chess is the clear winner. There is lots of research dating back over the past 30 years about the benefits of chess for young children. A quick search on Google will give you more than enough information on why chess is so great.

MB make loads of board games, such as Connect 4, and most of these have an age rating on the box.

As a teacher for over 20 years, I have to recommend a game that I just recently learned about myself. It has won many awards and my kids love it. Find a good game store and buy "Blokus" for your family... you'll enjoy it, too! I get beat by my kids all the time!

Well asking me, at his 5 I start teaching Chess to my son and he loved playing and teaching it to his other fellow friends. Although Checkers and Shoot and Ladders are among the best choices ever! Now he is awefully good at chess!

When my children were young they loved playing Memory, Chutes & Ladders, Hi-Ho-Cherry, and Concentration. These games help with memory, counting, and socializing.

I strongly recommend memory games, also games that help the child improve their number counting, relating things and math.
The link will direct you to some good games that your friend's child will enjoy.

Monopoly Jr is very good. My son is 5 and he loves it. It teaches basic math skills because they need to add and subtract small amounts when buying properties.

My son enjoys Mouse Trap and Operation. They teach strategy, patience, and skill. Teaching them checkers can be good as well.
