It's possible that other than having a Streptococcus infection in your throat, you have throat ulcers. If so, gurgling or drinking salt water will only make it more painful, so try to avoid that.
There is a kind of ulcer powder in the Chinese medicine shop in Singapore called Sore Throat powder. (If I could attach a picture I would) It is very cheap, about $1 and comes in a small bottle the size of your little finger. It is a green and very bitter powder, but once you have sprinkled some on your ulcer, it soothes it out and the pain goes away. If you need to get it into your throat, you might want to try putting it at the end of a cut-opened straw and getting someone to blow it down your throat, it works.
Don't worry, it does not cause any side effects, no headaches or vomitting etc. It is only for application and I found that it works best on ulcers if you apply it every night and sleep it off.
This is written on the box: The powder is made in Meizhou Medicine Factory, Kwangtung. China. This powder has the action of antipyretic, antiseptic, antiphlogistic and sedative. For treatement of sore throat, stomatitis, gingivitis and ulcerative dermatitis.
P/S: Drinking lots of water will help too. Hopefully this helps your throat.

It can be anything. You need to se a doctor to have strep throat ruled out. It most likely is just a minor infection that can be treated with antibiotics. Until you can get an appointment with a DR., you need to be gargling. Although warm salt water is somewhat helpful as is listerine, but I was told by my Dr. to gargle with wine. He said that alcohol kills a broad spectrum of germs. Plus after you gargle the wine you can swallow it so that the alcohol goes farther down your throat.

Strep throat? Tonsilitis? You may get a lot fo answers, but the only one that counts is the one your doctor will tell you. Go and get a throat culture. You may need antibiotics.

Strep throat... if in doubt check it out. Do NOT let strep run it's course without treatment. Untreated strep has been known to cause heart valve damage
