I have had insomnia since I was young. It's an annoying condition and sometimes totally disrupts your life. I have seen sleep specialists, doctors and psychiatrists, to no avail. After you have yourself checked out to make sure you have no physical disorders (ie, sleep apnia can cause you to sleep badly), what I have learned is that you have to train yourself to sleep. Learn to associate sleep and the bed. Do a relaxing activity for the last half hour before sleep, like reading or a warm bath. Don't consume caffinated beverages or alcohol late in the day (within 4-6 hours of bedtime). Try to get up the same time every day, even if you haven't slept well the night before. Make sure you do some sort of physical activity each day. If you find that you can't sleep within 20 minutes of going to bed, get up and do something relaxing until you feel tired, then return to bed.

Some people find that taking a supplement called melatonin helps. I have never tried it and I don't use sleep aids. Most of the time now I can sleep 6 hours a day.

Seriously, ask your doctor for a referral to a sleep specialist. I work in a sleep clinic and hear this all the time. If you only seem to sleep a few hours a night, you may need evaluated for an underlying sleep disorder. There are lots of things that can cause this, and a huge list of negative health effects from not getting enough sleep, from weight gain to depression to immune system problems.

It may be as simple as a prescription, but if there is something else, wouldn't you rather know and get it treated? Sleep studies are painless and the majority of sleep disorder treatments are as well.

Adults are supposed to be able to sleep between 6-8 hours a night, children is 8-10.

If you cant sleep at night try turning off any distractions, turn off all lights, listen to calm music, make sure youre comfortable, dont drink any kind of caffeine an hour or two before bed, etc.

Hi
if you can't sleep well, you may chose medications like diazepam, but these agents(benzodiazepins) can be effective for limited time and after a time they can be tolerated by you.
then, you may try some other works:
don't exercise just before sleeping, don't drink tea or cofee before sleep, and take a shower in bath with warm water before sleeping.
some foods, also can help you to go to bed better: yoghurt is one of ths best, because it provides you calcium that may work better for your bone density at night.

If you're able to, switch your hours around. I did. I work at night and sleep during the day. Works great for me until I start school again. I do housework at night and watch T.V.

how long you are sleeping is not important , how deep are you sleeping is important. Have a nice deep sleep (whether night or day)even for 4 hours a day. i think its better (from my experience)
