I am planning to take up regular exercises, since my blood test showed Cholestrol above normal level. I was thinking of doing work outs at the Gym. But as an alternative will Swimming alone help me. Or do I need to really sweat. ??

YES, swimming is great exercise, it sucks sugar out of the bloodstream and liver and this helps reduce cholesterol and converts fat to useable energy.

The greatest thing about swimming may be that you are extremely unlikely to get sidetracked by pulling a tendon or injuring a joint that requires you to stop exercising -- swimming flexes and strengthens the connective tissue without jarring or tearing it.

Consider some weight training every other day and some walking or jogging as well.

Consider the pills to reduce blood cholesterol that your doctor can prescribe.

Yes. Swimming is very good exercise and it is easier on the joints than some other forms of exercise. However, my doctor recommended I also cut out high cholesterol foods -- in addition to exercise. As long as you do regular exercise (my doctor recommends 4 times a week) and watch high cholesterol foods, you should be able to control it. Losing weight also helps.

Try Olivio instead of butter. Stay away from mayonaise or creamy salad dressings and use olive oil instead. If you like milk, use fat free milk (or as low fat as you can stand). Try to limit your intake of red meat and eat more chicken, turkey and fish. Lean meats are better of course. Also, regular cheeses are usually high in cholesterol so try to use low cholesterol cheeses -- Cabot makes low fat cheddar.

I reduced my cholesterol by 50 points without strenuous exercise (just regular exercise plus diet) and got it down to normal.

After jogging and running swimming is the best way to lose unwanted fat and suger from you blood. Its better to go for fast walking if you are old, cause swimming can become fatal for old people with high Cholestrol and fat (because of the risk of heart attack i guess).

Swimming is great! If you do not know how to swim you can still get great benefit exercising in the pool. You can get the benefits of walking for 1 hour by water-walking for only 20 minutes. The water produces resistance so you get more benefit in less time. There are water aerobic classes that are very strenuous and there are gentle water exercise classes for people with arthritis. You are less likely to get an injury from water exercise so definitely go for it.
