At my company we are allowed to take 3 days of paid bereavement leave when a family member dies. I took a day off to go to my grandma's funeral and then found out that "bereavement leave" comes out of your sick leave! Is this typical?

My HR person was the one who told me it comes out of my sick time.

Most companies I've heard of and worked for that had bereavement leave did not take it out of sick or vacation time. But, your company may have the policy that you can take the time off, but that it comes out of sick leave, or what some companies call Personal Time Off (PTO).

Check with your HR department.

I hope your company does not require you to take sick time for bereavement.

Generally, a company that offers bereavement leave does so as a gesture to the employee.

Charging the time off as sick leave is a little off the beaten path. I'd approach your HR person and see if it was just keyed in incorrectly.

Depends on your contract. I get three days, but I can take up to another week. The first three days of mine does not get charged against my leave, but the next week would be sick leave. So yes and no is the answer.

Nope. Normally a bereavemnet leave or emergency leave ( that is what we call it from my work place ) and sick leave are two different kinds of leave. Check your work contract if you have one.
