It shows a lack of social skills, or it suggests that the drinker is a lonely person who is trying to anesthetize him/herself from the problems in life. Doing this alone, without the support of friends, seems destructive and pathetic. Also, people tend to commit irresponsible acts when drunk. Having no one around to keep a drunk from harming themselves or doing something stupid is one of the risks of drinking alone.

When someone has a pattern of drinking alone is a sign that a person is slowly withdrawing into a "life" of alcoholic isolation where they don't have to risk people criticizing them for being drunk and they don't have to worry about what they might say or do when inebriated.

It's a sign that they get their comfort from alcohol instead of human interaction. The bottle becomes their "best friend" who always makes them feel better and never talks back or has anything bad to say.

But it's a dangerous and deceptive comfort.

Proverbs 23:29 Who has woe? Who has sorrow? Who has strife? Who has complaining? Who has wounds without cause? Who has redness of eyes? 30 Those who tarry long over wine; those who go to try mixed wine. 31 Do not look at wine when it is red, when it sparkles in the cup and goes down smoothly. 32 In the end it bites like a serpent and stings like an adder. 33 Your eyes will see strange things, and your heart utter perverse things. 34 You will be like one who lies down in the midst of the sea, like one who lies on the top of a mast. 35 "They struck me," you will say, "but I was not hurt; they beat me, but I did not feel it. When shall I awake? I must have another drink."

Most people who drink alone have a drinking problem...they are either alcoholics, or are tring to self medicate themselves. There are problems in their life they are trying to escape by drinking. The problems are still there when you sober up though. Drinking is alright when done socially, and in a responsible manner. When a person is drinking alone, it's not a social thing anymore.

When you are drinking with friends, it is usually a social ritual, a form of socializing. When you are drinking alone, you are doing it for the sole purpose of getting drunk.
