Yes, I would go to battery mode. The laptop is sensitive to electric surges, moreso than a PC. Nope, no rain and no clouds since forever and all of the grass and pretty flowers are just about dead and I hate it. Even the little birds have their tongues hanging out.

I have heard of peoples PC's getting fried even with a surge protector. so i would go to battery mode as long a possible. Thats what i do. At the moment it is not raining here but we are in the Monsoon season here. We have had a lot of rain and flooding. In Arizona.

God, I wish it would rain here in Missouri, we are having a serious drought. The heat is unbearable and even the big trees are starting to turn brown. Yes, unplug and go to battery, just until the major close lightening is over.

Walking Man is correct. Lightning passing through the electrical wires, whether electrical lines, phone lines, or cable, can electrocute and kill you.
Here's a copy/paste from the NOAA:
Summary of Lightning Safety Tips for Inside the Home
1.
Avoid contact with corded phones
2.
Avoid contact with electrical equipment or cords. If you plan to unplug any electronic equipment, do so well before the storm arrives.
3.
Avoid contact with plumbing. Do not wash your hands, do not take a shower, do not wash dishes, and do not do laundry.
4.
Stay away from windows and doors, and stay off porches.
5.
Do not lie on concrete floors and do not lean against concrete walls.

I wish it was raining here..I love thunderstorms..not big ones, but little ones...
Anyways, about the first part of your question, if there is a lot of lightning, you might want to turn over to battery mode.

It has stopped here, storming that is. I always unplug mine and run off of the battery because it isn't plugged into a surge strip. I've always heard it would be bad for TV's, CPU's, etc. to not be protected during a storm.

Not only would I unplug it, I would also disconnect the phone line or cable line or whatever else you have that is connected to the outside.
No rain here.

If its plugged into a surge protector, it will be fine. If not, you may want to unplug it.
Its not raining where I am, but I am in the desert!
