Is the coolness in the cap/cork or in the taste?

It eliminates the possibility for the cork to mold and make the wine go bad. Anyone who can't drink a wine with a screw off top is a wine snob who doesn't really know anything about wine.

They are far superior to cork stoppers. Because they are cheaper., than cork and there was a cork supply crisis looming in Portugal a few years ago/ Metal corks are cheaper to buy and cheaper to process. Also, they due not suffer form "cork taint" where the cork goes bad and turns the wine's taste foul. About 10% of wine bottles suffer form cork taint. This drives the wine producers crazy because the taint may not be obvious but the wine tastes sub-par because of it (i.e. it has an off taste) . This gives the winery an undeserved bad reputation. The obviously tainted bottles are returned or dumped and the buyer demands a refund. Metal corks do not suffer form that problem. Most Australian vintners have already switched over to metal corks with no loss in wine quality.. The only factors that are holding back such usage by European vintners is tradition, the ceremony of decorking wine bottles, and snobbish disdain for aluminum and plastic coated metal corks. American producers will be switching shortly, (if they have not done so, in significant numbers, by now). And Europe will see the inevitable eventually, or continue to lose World wine exporting market share. Needless to say the Portuguese government and cork oak producers are having fits and are finally doing significant research on the age old problem of cork taint. (& it's about time).

A lot of wine bottlers are going to screw caps today. I guess there is a cork shortage? I don't know that for sure, but my brother-in-law, who's a sommelier talked about it. I guess the artificial corks are relatively expensive as well. So, if you're drinking a $10-20 bottle of wine, theres a good chance it's gonna have a screw cap. And there's nothing wrong with that!! They're also easier to open. Enjoy!!

There's definitely a certain snobbishness associated with cork versus screw top (which is associated with inferior wine). However, as bottling technology advances, they've found that screw tops are just as good as cork in sealing a good bottle of wine.

Cork was originally used because it was better than storing in wooden casks. Cork was found to have an almost perfect seal. However, these days poorer quality cork is being used.

Plumpjack Winery's Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon, one of the most rare and sought-after wines in California, has a screw top.

The first thing I think of when I see a screw off top is Damn that is one cheap bottle of wine!

With a corked wine there is a quality to it, a presentation to opening and when you smell it you can smell the flavor before you drink it. It's more then just drinking it, it's an occasion even if it is just Tuesday. You can't do any of that with screw off.

The screw off cap is better for the wine, but I still prefer a cork. Screw off caps just don't seem right.

some of the good brands have adopted the screwtop for their wine bottles because it has been developed to the point where it keeps out more O2 than a cork will. this will protect the taste.
