some words dont have a past tense, so you change the rest of the sentence to fit. you would say "there was a lot of lightning earlier"

Ligntning isn't an action, it's an object.
A book is always a book no matter when you see it. But you can see a book now, have seen it in the past or will see it in the future.
Tense is usually given to an action,

There were flashes (plural) of lighting earlier---RIGHT!!!
