some words dont have a past tense, so you change the rest of the sentence to fit. you would say "there was a lot of lightning earlier"

I don't think there is a passed tense. You would need to change your sentence to read: There was a lot of lightning earlier

Ligntning isn't an action, it's an object.
A book is always a book no matter when you see it. But you can see a book now, have seen it in the past or will see it in the future.
Tense is usually given to an action,

ahem. lightning is a noun. it's not a verb. you can only say 'there was a lot of lightning earlier!

There were lots of lightning earlier---WRONG!!!

There were flashes (plural) of lighting earlier---RIGHT!!!


e.g. NOT furnitures BUT sets of furniture
