If you have an unlimited supply of water and you have two buckets and one holds 4 gallons and the other holds 9 gallons and you need exactly 6 gallons (for what, I don't know...), so--how do you get the 6 gallons out of those two buckets. I had guessed that you fill the 4-gallon one up and pour into the 9-gallon one and then fill the 4-gallon one half-way up and pour into the 9-gallon one and that would be 6 gallons, but I was informed that this theory is incorrect because you wouldn't be able to measure exactly 1/2 of the 4-gallon bucket. So, somebody please help me figure this out !!

This is simple. You fill up the 9 gallon bucket, and then pour it off into the 4 gallon bucket. This leaves 5 gallons of water in the 9 gallon bucket. Dump the 4 gallon bucket, and again pour from the 9 gallon into the 4 gallon. This should now leave 1 gallon of water in the 9 gallon bucket. Again, dump the 4 gallon and again, pour the 1 gallon from the 9 gallon bucket. DO NOT dump the 4 gallon bucket. LEAVE the 1 gallon of water in there. Now, Fill the 9 gallon bucket, and this time, when you go to dump off into the 4 gallon bucket, you will only be able to dump 3 gallons, as 1 gallon is already in the 4 gallon bucket. 9 gallons minus 3 gallons is 6 gallons.....get it?

Fill up the 9 gallon bucket. Empty out four gallons into the four gallon bucket. That leaves you with 5 gallons in the 9 gallon bucket. Dump the 4 gallon bucket and refill from the 9 gallon bucket. That leaves you with one gallon in the 9 gallon bucket.

Dump the 4 gallons and pour the one gallon from the 9 gallon bucket. Fill the nine gallon bucket again. Pour into the 4 gallon bucket until it is full, that will take three gallons.

That leaves you with 6 gallons in the 9 gallon bucket.

Fill the 9 gallon bucket. Fill 4 gallon bucket from 9 gallon bucket. Dump 4 gallon bucket. Fill it again from what is left in 9 gallon bucket. Dump the 4 gallon bucket again. You now have 1 gallon of water in the 9 gallon bucket. Pour it into the 4 gallon bucket and keep it there. Refill the 9 gallon bucket. Top off the 4 gallon bucket with 3 gallons from the 9 gallon bucket. The 9 gallon bucket will now have 6 gallons in it.

fill 9 gal bucket then fill the 4 gal bucket with the water from the 9 gal bucket. What you have left is 5 gal in the 9 gal bucket. dump it to its final location. You will then repeat above...fill 9 gal bucket and drain water into the 4 gal bucket 2 times. What you have left in the 9 gal bucket is 1 gal. Combine this with the other 4 gal for 5 total gal. (9-4)+(9-4-4)=6
