Multiviscosity oil flows when it is cold and does not thin out too much when it is hot.

It tells the consumer that it is a multiblended oil the W stands for the weight of the oil or a more simple way to look at it is thikness of oil, so a 10w30 is a mix of 10 and 30 wait oils. making it easyer to use for multiple types of engines.

That identifies a multi-viscosity oil. Its cold flow characteristics are the same as an SAE 10 motor oil and its hot flow characteristics are the same as an SAE 30 motor oil.

this may sound simple........Oil is blended to work hot or cold. 10W oil is good when U start yer car cold in the am. Now when it's warm it needs heavier oil...........that's where the 30-40-50 comes in. Usta be 50 yrs ago U got one weight oil. Put 20 wt in car in winter 30 wt in summer. Oil is important change it regularly.

as the oil warms up,it changes viscosity...the 10 i think is the oil at ambient temperature and the 30 is when the engine is at opperating at temperature
10 = cold
w = warm
30 = at normal operating temp.

10w-30 means it can flow like a 10 weight (acts like one) and is a 30 weight at operating temp...... w stands for winter.....

5w-30 is like 10w-30, just has a little better cold weather flow, so less startup wear in the cold.... common practice is 5w-30 in the winter, 10w-30 in the summer because 10w-30 is a little more shear resistent than 5w-30.
