"The longest word in any major English language dictionary is pneumonoultramicroscopicsilicovolcanoconiosis, a 45-letter word supposed to refer to a lung disease, but research has discovered that this word was originally intended as a hoax. It has since been used in a close approximation of its originally intended context, lending at least some degree of validity to its claim.

The Guinness Book of Records, in its 1992 and subsequent editions, declared the "longest real word" in the English language to be floccinaucinihilipilification at 29 letters (More recent editions of the book have since aknowledged pneumonoultramicroscopicsilicovolcanoconiosis).

Defined as "the act of estimating (something) as worthless", its usage has been recorded as far back as 1741. In recent times its usage has been recorded in the proceedings of the United States Senate by Senator Robert Byrd, and at the White House by Bill Clinton's press secretary Mike McCurry, albeit sarcastically."

Yes. Technically research has discovered that "pneumonoultramicroscopicsilicovolcanoconiosis" was originally intended as a hoax. It really isn't a real word.
The longest true word is "floccinaucinihilipilification" which means to state something as fallacy. Or fake. Its only 29 letters but its real. Its also in Guiness.

yes it is the longest word in the dictioanry (we only see part of the word that seocnd part of the word that we dotn see is "...icoliosis")

I memorized the word so that I can say it in less than a second,a nd people are always in awe when they see me say it. It is funny

It is a medical condition where you breathe in a single spec of dust, and then breathe in some water after a certain amount of time which creates mud in your lungs and can kill you

HERE IS A BREAKDOWN OF THE WORD:

pnu- latin for lungs
mono - latin for one
micro - latin for small
scopic - also latin for small
silicon - a type of dust
volcani - latin for firey
coli - latin for burning
osis - just to make it sound like a disease

Hippopotomonstrosesquippe daliophobia

definition - the fear of long words

Note that the above is one long word but I had to put a space in there to keep the stupid Yahoo Answers editor from truncating it.

Some people don't accept some words because the only reason they exist is to be the longest word for the most part.

But a commonly accepted word to be the longest is the antidisestablishmentarianism or whatever, although that isn't the longest.

Well I've got to do this, even though I'm being something of a prat...

Its "Hippopotomonstrosesquipedalian" which means "pertaining to a very, very long word.

And the other word can be written as "Floccinaucinihilipilification" or even "Floccinaucinihilipilificatrix"

The second means "A woman who has the habit of estimating things as worthless"

BTW... I didn't count... which of the three is longer??? LOL
