Now that is something to think about...along with, Why is Barney purple, I've never seen a purple dinosaur in museums or books and certainly not ion Jurassic Park.
Why is a parkway something you drive on and why is a driveway something you park on? Another mystery!
I know it's human nature to ask why...but I just don't see the reasoning behind trying to find a conspiracy in every aspect of life. I would guess that the Michelin Man is white simply because of the ease with dealing in graphics. A white Michelin Man also means that when printing, they save on ink since only outlines would be needed.

Original sythetic rubber was carbonless, thus white. Andre commissioned the creation of this jolly, rotund figure after his brother Edouard, observed that a display of stacked tires resembled a human form in 1898. The artist's sketches of a bloated man made of tires was exactly what the brothers had in mind. Thus, the birth of the Michelin man, race really had nothing to do with it, although the Micheline brothers were white Frenchmen.

LOL. I didn't even know he was tires. I just assumed he was some freak of nature that Michelin came up with. I guess because he's white, that's why I didn't think he was tires. Maybe he's the Michael Jackson of the tire species.

Ya know, that's a very good question. Damn, people should be more proud of who they are! Yeah, I agree...who's ever seen an entirely white tire? Maybe something threw a bucket of bleach on him... or he's a relative of Michael Jackson :P

Synthetic rubber is yellowish. The carbon is added for appearances. Originally, tires were yellowish, then they went to white, and when asphalt became so popular for roads, they standardized the color to not show road film..
(Addendum: Responder #31 addresses this better than I do)
However, he could use a good exercise program.
Oh, and his name is Bibendum.
