You can find it but it might not be where you'd like to live.

In some rural areas in the Valley you can find a piece of land with a mobile home for well under $100,000. If you need to be near the cities for work, etc., though, it's pretty much impossible to find a decent place in a reasonably safe neighborhood for under $150,000.

Best of success.

the only home you'll find in california (at least in souther cali.) for 20G's is a trailer/mobile home, or a crappy apartment. Seriously. Yes, cali. has a very high cost to live, but it's a beautiful coast. you are right, it depends on where you live. I was in the Marine Corps while in Cali., and we rented apartments back then (which too are soooo expensive to rent monthly!!) so I didn't have to worry about buying a house. But goodness, I wish I still lived out there, but my husband and I would have to make BANK to live there. (If you have not been there, visit southern cali. and if you join the Marines, you could get stationed at Camp Pendleton, which is 35 miles north of San Diego, get paid what is called "BAH" (housing allowance) if you are allowed to live off base,Plus you'll have a blast partying and meeting people and going places.. but, alas, unless you stay in military and retire, or just place a job where you make the bucks, you probably couldn't afford cali. sorry for the novel, but this question made me recall those wonderful days.

Boy, maybe in the boonies like in Death Valley.

If you want a house with a roof, an earthquake-safe foundation, running water, electricity and to be near some type of highway, I think you won't find anything for less than $100K.

California is the most expensive state overall. Mass. runs 2nd (for housing).

New York City (Manhattan, etc.) and the surrounding area is expensive. But upstate NY (Albany, Syracuse, Buffalo, etc.) is rural and cheap.

I'm sure if you go to the Midwest states like Iowa or Nebraska, prices are lower. CA isn't the most expensive. I believe NY is.

The prices are due ot cost of living and, of course, supply and demand. San Francisco homes cost more because more poeple want to live there. It also costs more to live in CA because most Californians are paid a lot, and can afford it.

For my job I sometimes read newspapers in the Midwest and, yes, nice houses are available for $59,000. That is in Ohio, Illinois. I also know someone who sold her nice 3BR house in south Texas for about $50,000.

I agree, out of state best place or mobile/manufactured homes in CA.

It's bad when living in CA you can't afford to buy your OWN home back.

Good looking!
