While the bible contains historical fact. I don't believe it should be taken literally. The people existed, events happened, and many of the situations spoken of in the bible were very real. You must remember, however, that a lot of this was initially passed down by word of mouth, from generation to generation. The books of the bible weren't necessarily being written as events were happening and The New Testament was not written until long after Jesus had died and resurrected (approx. 60 AD) and it was written not by Jesus but by his followers. Much was also lost when the bible was translated into english. What Jesus taught and the example He set, such as: love, forgiveness, compassion, dignity, respect, faith and mercy are not old-fashioned virtues that have no place in today's society. It is as relevant today as it was in Jesus' time. Yes we should all learn by our mistakes, but we never do. That's why Jesus left us HIS WORD, to teach us how to live; and for the times we don't learn our lessons, it can be used as source of great comfort. The message contained within this divinely inspired and powerful book remains one of hope.

The Bible is a unique book for sure.

It is a single book -- but it is also a series of books. Many books written by different people at different times under varied circumstances. It is the inspired word of God, meaning that the Holy Spirit went into the minds of these various authors and told them what to record.

It is a miraculous book in that the authentication of all the points written in the Bible match up historically in alignment with other history books of the time -- exactly. It is one of the most sure ways to be able to see that the Bible is without error.

So you are correct to say it is a history book -- real life, real people. It is God revealing Himself to these people through those real situations -- just as He continues toreveal Himself in the history of your life and mine today.

It's amazing isn't it?

The bible is unreliable as a history book. There are parts that are correct but most of it is not. To be viewed as a book of facts, it should be able to be verified by other books but it is not. The central character of the new testament for example, is mentioned nowhere else, therefore his existence is doubtful.

It is no more factual than the Da Vinci Code and should not be considered so.

The christian bible has been translated through Aramaic, greek, hebrew, latin and english, was passed orally for 300 years and was edited by the council of Nicea, the council of Hippos and King James.

It's no more history than Dan Brown's book.
