I am a single father of a 10 year old daughter. who has started having cramps. which I am afraid that periods are soon to follow. How do I explain to her how things are gonna happen, the tampon/maxipad issue (insertion, etc) and how to shave her legs(which she is ready for now). I dont have family that could help, havent seen her mom in ages.

Ok well when a young women first starts her period then she shouldn't use tampons until she's had it for a year. Since she's so young try a pad like Always Ultra Thin, they're perfect for people with smaller bodies and are comfortable. As for as shaving her legs she needs to find a good razor that she likes something with 3 blades will work great, (no disposables they cut and nick really bad). And find a good shave gel like Sentiment (it smells good too). She should put a good layer on her legs and run the razor against the hair growth (like from the lower leg where the foot is to up). For her arms she should go with the hair (going from the bend of her arm down). The link below should be helpful she can read it herself or you can read it and learn it all and tell it to her. This site may actually be helpful for you to understand what's going on in her young soon to be teenage life. . . Good Luck!

The American Girl Library (Pleasant Company) - you might know what American Girl Dolls are & if not I am sure your daughter does - has a book called " The Care & Keeping of YOU The Body Book For Girls". It covers these topics and more - & even has pictures! My daugher was pretty shy about this stuff, so when I saw her looking at this book at the book store I bought it and she spent a lot of time with it and also shared it with her friends. Sitting down with your daughter and looking at this book together might be an easy way to discuss girl stuff with her. This book can probably be found at most of your bigger bookstore chains and also can be ordered on line. It is soft back book.
10 years old is pretty young for periods - but it is best to be prepared. Usually in 5th grade the public schools also teach what periods are and personal hygiene. It is also possible that the cramps are just a stomach ache. Not all girls get cramps with periods.
I hope this helps -

although i was not 10 when i started my period, im only 16 so i went through this stuff not too long ago. she shouldnt use a tampon when she first starts her period, i still dont use them. just buy her pads, i like always brand size regular with flexy wings. When shes ready to use a tampon, the instructions in the box should be very helpful and she can talk to her friends. Dont take her to see a doctor, its just a waste of time and can be embarrassing, so can talking to a teacher or a school nurse. unless she says she wants to talk to them, dont take her. as for shaving her legs, she doesnt need shaving gel, soap works fine. a disspossable razor works but i wouldnt use that for my first time. shes going to cut herself no matter what, i still do. most things about her body she'll figure out on her own, through experience, making mistakes and learing from her friends.

buy the tampons or maxipads for her, there are instruction pamphlets in the box. Read them yourself first and then try to explain it to her. If she wants to shave her legs, take her to the store let her pick out an overpriced pink fancy thing and let her try. Gernerally the concept is the same as shaving your face. Good luck and good for you for thinking in advance.

Make her an appointment with a friendly, non-threatening female gynecologist. Talk to the Dr. or the office beforehand and explain that you're a single dad and want to ease your daughter's mind without making her feel uncomfortable. No exam for your daughter, just a consultation with someone who can explain what's happening.

Does your daughter have friends. If she has a close friend why don't you approach the friend's Mom and ask her for help. School will be starting soon and school nurses are great to ask for help. In the meantime get yourself a book on how to talk to preteen/teen girls. If your daughter sees that you can talk to her about "girl things" and be comfortable she will be comfortable in coming to you in the future.

A kind, female pediatrician would be best. Don't take her to a OB/GYN yet, she would still really value(at 10 years) going to something familiar, comfortable and seeing someone who knows how to speak to children. Make yourself available to her, but most likely she will be slightly weirded out by talking to her dad. Good luck, it sounds like you are on the right path!

Try talking to her teachers at school, maybe her PDH teacher can help explain it to her, or take her to your local doctor and get him/her to explain it all. There are books you can read on how to talk about this stuff to your kid, research on the internet or go to your local bookstore. Good luck!

Take her to the doctor, buy her a book, or get one of her close friends mom (that she is comfortable with) to tell her.
