Buck O'Neil, 94, was a star of the old ***** Leagues and was Major League Baseball's first black coach and discovered many future stars. Why was he denied entry into the National Baseball Hall of Fame?? Anyone know? What are the qualifications for entry into the NBHF?

Buck O'Neil's stats are definitely not HOF numbers. So as a player there is no justification in any argument that would place him in the HOF. However, as an ambassador of the games, yes. He has been a wonderful salesman for the game and should be given a special place in the Hall for devoting his life to the game. It is sad that near the end of his life he can not enjoy the fruits of his labor. I always think about this when someone, already passed, gets elected. It's so anticlimactic. Thank goodness Richie Ashburn got in and was able to enjoy it for a couple of years before he died.

It's not that he was denied, it's that he was elected in. The major problem with O'Neil's candidacy was that, while he was very good in a number of areas (as a player, as a coach, in the ***** Leagues, in the majors), in no single area was he outstanding. While his total career was incredible, the individual parts, taken on their own, were not.

First, he was denied entrance to MLB because of the color line and yet he harbors no ill will.
Now he can't even get elected to the HOF (as good will ambassador, coach and spokesman). You would think that the veterans committee would have done the right thing.
Life is really a blip, isn't it?

Because of the huge number of unpaid parking tickets. They had to draw the line somewhere.
