I come from Asia, and when someone watched a movie that I haven't, they would answer me when I had a question like DID THIS PERSON DIE? HOW DID IT END? etc....they rarely ever told me YOU'LL SEE or I CAN'T TELL YOU....

When I migrated to America, it seems like everyone won't answer questions about movies for me....they always say that it'll ruin the movie for me, and they just won't say anything...also, once, i told them the ending to a movie, and they got so mad at me (well, not angry mad, but acting mad, i guess)...

Khaled Hosseini also wrote about this in THE KITE RUNNER...

Is it true that Asians don't care if they find out what the end of the movie is or what happens to the characters before they watch a movie, whereas Americans do, and they hate it when you tell them the ending/what happens to the characters?

I agree.

It seems to be considered a breech of etiquette to give away the ending to a film in North America.

Ever since that incident with The Crying Game, but even before that there were problems with The Empire Strikes Back.

It costs so much more than it used to to go to the movies or to even rent them, that people want their money's worth of the full shock value.

But it is important to address that this is a cultural difference, and not a sweeping generalization. I'm sure there are many people in North America that just don't care about the movie's ending, just as some Asians do.

Just try to think of it as minding your manners. It's okay to give a brief premise and genre and even who stars in it, but the ending? Off limits!

Telling the ending of a movie that I haven't seen yet always ruins the experience for me. If I already know what going to happen there's really nothing left to the excitement of a good movie. Now telling me about the movie is okay as long as you don't say anything about the ending.

Hope this was helpful.

it depends on the movie. Some movies are all about the ending, some are about the journey. I don't like to answer people's questions while we are watching the movie, because what's the point in watching the movie. If I think the movie is good and suggested it to you, then I do feel like I am ruining the movie for you. There are reasons why things are revealed when they are in stories.
If someone tells you about a good book, do you go out and by the cliff notes or the book.
Any movie's story that is not ruined by someone telling you what happens is fluff. Fluff is OK, it just depends on what you are in the mood for.

hmm... interesting thought, girl! it's strange for me when people get so uptight to NOT want to know how the movie ends. they say that it would spoil the movie. hah!

i, myself, like to know the ending. so, i would always ask, "how did it end?" this does not only apply for movies but also to novels. i always read the end first before i begin to read a new book. =)

don't tell me the endings, please! i hate it when people ruin the ends of movies. i thinks it's because in america, going to the theater is an experience, not just another way to waste away the afternoon.
