I assume you're talking about ESL for school-age kids. Well, we need it so that kids will learn English quickly -- yes, I know kids pick up languages with greater facility than adults do, but ESL will help them learn it faster and, I suppose, with better grammar and syntax. Also, if the kid is in school taking classes that he or she is really good at, but is getting bad grades anyway just because of the language barrier, then teaching classes in the kid's own language for a bit, while they learn English from the ESL classes, is only fair, right?

I dont know if you already know why, and just want other people to answer to see if their right, or you don't know and need answers.

But, since my brother is an ESL teacher i have a perfec answer.

English as we all know is a nation wide language. Their are millions of people from every country that can speak english (even if they have an accent)

We have ESL for the people in America who do not know how to speak english... otherwise known as, we teach them.

If people migrated from somewhere to America to have a better life then... how can they have a better life if they can't speak english? They need this language if they were to survive in America and also it is fun for foreigns to learn (Atleast for some)

Bottom Line: ESL is a learning siciety from school, and other palces that helps kids, adults, teans, or elders learn English. And we need it so we can communicate with them in order to help.

Since the USA has the largest economy everybody wants to do business with us so they need to learn English.
Americans don't like to learn foreign languages. Those are the reasons for ESL.

To help people who do not speak English as their first language. If we want people to assimilate, than we ought to offer all the help we can.

What we really need, however, is a OTESL (other than English as second language) program. There is an old joke that asks:

If people who speak two languages are biligual, and people who speak many languages are called polylingual, what to you call people who speak only one language?

Answer: Americans.

For people whose native language is not English. English is the most diffucult language to learn- our many rules (or seemingly lack thereof of any structure) make it a very tough and demanding to grasp. There are a lot of people who study in the US who live in other countries, and they need to be able to get their English credit. College level English may be too diffucult. Besides, the US isn't as accomodating as other countries. Most other societies are fluent in English, and many other languages beyond their native tongue. Most Americans are only fluent in English.

So that people who did not learn English as their first language can learn to read, write, and speak it fluently. This is highly beneficial to them (much as learning multiple languages is to all people), especially when one considers that English is widely known and now the preferred language of diplomacy.
