I thought It was a continent. Sometimes it and the other island around it are called Oceania.
Wikipiki says there are 7 different continent models/naming conventions.

Australia is the only country to also be a continent. It just so happened that it didn't get divided up like other continents. The British were the first Europeans to discover Australia. The aborigines were there for tens of thousands of years first.

continents are the major land masses (N. & S. America, Europe, Asia, Africa, Australia and Anartica) while a country in a sovergn body, Austraila just so happens to fit into both of these.
