This is part of a Y!A answer concerning the Mel gibson incident.

I am about the same age as Mel and as a Catholic school student, I was taught by the nuns to hate the Christ Killers. These ideas, erroneous as they may be, stay in our head for lifetime.

My question to you: Do find yourself ever confronted by the bigotry you were taught as a child? What do you do to disable these thoughts and judge a situation on its own merits.?

I had to address it directly, as I became aware of it in my mid teens. I was taught more fear based bias than virulent racism. We lived in the inner city during the turbulent '60's. and those kind of experiences can leave a mark. Attacked and mugged for being white had the same sting as it does in the other direction.
I moved out to the country where there was a substantial Black population (former Southern Share Croppers) , and an Indian Reservation too. I got to know a bunch of those folks, and that is when I learned that the character traits I didn't like in people was not genetic as it seemed when I was a kid, but cultural. And it was not necessarily universal in a group.
I am now very much aware to be on guard for preconceived notions that may linger from my youth. It's not perfect yet, but working on it every day is essential.

Well, once you are old enough to look around and make your own judgment about things, you should disable these thoughts fairly easily. I was brought up to respect all people, luckily. I did have a fear of black men that wasn't from my parents, but a result from our house being robbed by a black man while I was home and about 5 years old. I remember not trusting black people for a long time just because of this incident. Once I was old enough to know that anyone could have broken into our house and it just happened to be a black man, those fears subsided and faded.

Every one has problems. How can we know what to expect?

As with each individual, each according their own gifts!

We make decisions about what is right and wrong every day.

The struggle is not without, but within.

Decide what is right, don't even consider what's wrong.

Once what's right is decided, go with it!

All we can do is our best, after that it's up to a higher power.

Your statement is certainly true. I try to keep an open mind and am always willing to listen to the viewpoints of others. Even if they are wrong. (That was a joke kids.)
