OK first and foremost d NOT get just ONE but get atleast two, in the wild they live in large colonies of 100 and more and to just keep one is cruel because they are WILD exotic land crusteaceans.
Loc P.. is a liar... no one grows land hermit crabs,, you are unable to breed and raise land hermit crabs in captivity.. many scientists and biologists with the top of the line equipment and millions of dollars at their disposal have not been successful in raising "baby" land hermit crabs from egg, to Zoea to the baby/juevenile stages to adult or micro stage. It is impossible.
lil' t.. you are mistaken terribly, they are not Herbivores but Omnivores, they are also scavengers and eat anything from plant, mineral and animal matter.

Food Info and tips
Change out fresh food every 24 hours or so. That will prevent mold and bacteria as well as pests like mites and gnats.
Dried foods should be offered in a seperate bowl for ease of use.. because dry foods can be left for 3 days of so, but at the first sign of mold or spoilage foods need to be removed.
Crabs eat alot for the small guys that they are.. not sure if they are eating? Smooth out the sand around their bowls.. in the morning you will see hermit prints!
Hermits usually eat at night while we sleep, but many also munch during the day when they are de-stressed and comfortable.
Offer a different food each time you wash the dishes.. crabs love a varied diet since they are scavengers and normally do not find the same thing to eat every night.
Make sure you try to offer organic human grade foods only.. avoid foods with high chemical content, pesticides or anything that you can not easily pronounce. Hermit crabs are senstivite creatures.
Smelly, sticky or messy foods can be offered during or just prior to a deep clean to help prevent an in tank mess.

Hermit crabs will eat most of the things that people here were saying. But the preservatives in most human foods drastically shorten the life of your hermit crab. Try fresh veggies (especially green like collard greens or kale or lettuce if you have to) & over-ripe fruits like bananas or strawberries or peaches. Just make sure your fruit is good & mushy for the crabs to ingest.
Good luck!

Most hermit crabs are herbivores so try feeding it something like lettuce to snack on until you do get to the pet store. But don't get me wrong some do eat meat so also try giving it some raw shrimp.

Oh yes. Hermit crabs love Chicken Alfredo. Those harvested from southern climes have a penchant for hominy grits.

I used to grow and sell hermit crabs...they love raw shrimp.
Don't give them the whole shrimp, cut it into pieces.
