In MOST cases, this particular pipe is used for the D W V plumbing (Drain, Waste, Vent)... it allows the plumbing to vent harmful gases, and also prevents any 'air pockets' in the drain system.
In NEW home construction.... it could actually be an exhaust vent for a new furnace. These new high efficiency furnaces exhaust air that is cool enough, that they can use PVC pipes, instead of the old double walled metal exhausts. The furnace exhausts, tend to be about 2 inches in diameter... D W V plumbing, is normally about 1 1/2 inches diameter... sometimes it is made of black pipe, which is actually ABS plastic, not PVC
In either situation... the pipe is there for a reason... do not cut it, plug it up, etc.

Most of the PVC pipes through the roof are plumbing vent pipes. They are necessary to make sure the drains all drain. Good luck

THE PVC pipe is for emmitting METHANE gas from your toilet area... it works in conjunction with the "elbow" trap under your sink the elbow stay full of water and prevents the methane gases from coming back up the drain and into your bathroom. I f you have ever been in an abandoned house without water the gas smell is from the drains being empty of water. I believe the name is plenium pipe for the bit coming out of roof.

Hello. I did some roofing work. That PVC that sticks out from the roof (top is open) Is for the water pipes from your bathroom-it is a way of ventilating the sewage pipes-Sorry I don't know the 'scientific' name for it, however.

The pvc pipe is a vent. It allows air into the system and sewer gas out.

its called a vent stack pipe and they vent gases that build up in the sewers this is the top of the 4 or 5 inch pipe that all the toilets and sinks and so on empty into the methane gas could explode or poison the family without these vents

It's a sewer drain vent pipe, commonly referred to as a "stink pipe". It's purpose is to keep pressure from building up in your household drain lines and allow your sinks to drain and your toilets to flush.

It is probably a vent from the bathroom drains to expel noxious gases
