yes and no, i was in a lot of pain, for an entire day, it turn out to be gas

If you're talking about permanently holding in your flatulence for the rest of your life, then yes, of course it would be bad.
You have an anus for a reason. Things expelled from that region are done so simply because they are not safe enough to be contained within the human body anymore. If it's plugged so tightly to where you couldn't flatulate, your body would resort to burping instead--sending that excess gas up through your intestines. You wouldn't necessarily explode because this very thing happens.
Why would you want to hold them in anyway...? At some point, it should be too uncomforable to care, so...just cut loose when you can. You'll feel much better knowing you did, and you'd be somewhat healthier to boot.

I believe farting is a way to release unwanted gas from your body. It's not advisable to hold in your farts as you may get a tummy ache cos of that. There may be a slight bloating feeling in your tummy and it may be quite uncomfortable.
I tried holding my farts before.. and well lets just say the ache is bloody uncomfortable!

It's not bad if you don't overdo it. However, if you hold in too many, they may accumulate until you explode.
