Like, duh, doesn't that lower the quality of the questions?

On the other hand, if you get a lot of points it's not like you're going to get a toaster oven or something...

So that you will close the question out. You get 10 points for picking the best answer and closing the question out.

So really there is no penalty.

When this site was formed by the executives, they came up with all the rules for a reason. When people decide to answer the questions, they have to agree to abide by the rules. I think some people question too many things about what we decide to do; if we want to do something, do it. If not, and we don't like the rules, don't join and play. And after we join and decide we don't like the rules, we can always quit it and find another site that we like the rules better. When I was being raised, I learned to follow the rules and I still do that today. I think we realize when we join this there are no concrete presents for participation and best answers. Acceptance of rules seems to be out of fashion today. If the execs ever decide to put the rules to the test, all the individuals who don't like the rules can put their two cents worth in and see if they can get them changed. I like the rules just fine like they are and I lose no sleep over them. There's too many things of daily importance in my life to worry over such frivolous trivia. This is just a fun thing, like going to the movies.

To cut down on spam and people asking the same question over and over and like someone said above to reduce the amount of bigoted/hateful questions.

Also, if one has to pay (points-wise) one might ask a more thoughtful question.

What!?! No Toaster Oven. I'm bummed out.

u are penalized because you are asking a question and recieving answers from real people for free. you have paid nothing for the services, whereas if you had gone to someone with the same question, he/she will charge a fee. even if you are penalized, you arent losing anything. The points are abstract and dont have any physical value

Many people ask questions not for the sake of getting information, but to be hateful, insulting, profane or inappropriate. It is nice to have a place to meet with others and talk candidly, but so many people go over the top.

No, it raises the quality, as it gets people to think before asking.

If it were neutral, you could ask very many questions and straight spam the board.

I think that they are trying to prevent people from spamming the board and asking questions just to upset others.

They have all the right to do anything they want, after all, it,s their turf.and they have laid down the rules! It's either you follow or get out!. So, before posting your questions, better read the community guidelines first.

Because its like you are needing information instead of giving information. The same reason a bank charges interest on loans and adds interest on back accounts: you are taking money instead of giving it ( but with yahoo! answers, you are taking answers instead of giving them).

Cause they don't want you to ask stupid questions, like this one, just to be asking questions. They think that if there's a cost, you will consider your questions more carefully before just throwing them out there. How's it workin'?
