My two month old is having difficulty with her bowel movements. She is a breast fed baby and goes to the bathroom every 3-5 days. She is not constipated, yet screams when she tries to go. It seems like it takes a few days in her intestines and that there is not enough pressure to make her go. Any thoughts would be appreciated.

You must be so worried!
Here are some things to consider.

After the first few weeks, many breastfed babies only have bowel movements every few days. Some go as much as a week, and some even longer. This is normal :)

Some babies make a huge deal about having a BM, no matter how frequently they go.

Has you baby always screamed when pooping, or is this something new?

If your doctor does not have many patients who are breastfeeding, s/he may not be familiar with their pooping patterns. If this is the case, you may want to see another doctor, who has more experience with breastfed babies, for a second opinion.

Hope this helps :)

I would suggest a couple of things. First of all, ask the doctor what he is treating if she is having bowel movements at a normal frequency and she isn't constipated. What is he worried about? What is he looking for? (If he doesn't know what to look for, there is a low chance of finding it!!)

Secondly, get a second opinion. Be sure the second doctor is someone who knows what is normal for breastfed babies *and* that it's a second opinion.

Then you'll have more information to use to decide.

Even though you probably trust your doctor, there is no harm in getting a second opinion. Then you will feel much more confident in going forward with what the doctors reccommend. And then if their opinions vary you know you have some thinking to do, and maybe even need more opinions.

It would be better to know that there is a problem than to not know and something to happen to her. I would go with the ped on this one perhaps get a second opinion. You really need to ask yourself how well do you like and trust this person..If you don't like the answer it;s time to look for a new Dr. I did not like my son's first Dr. But love his new dr. They are great! Best of luck to you and baby!

i am a doctor
yes i think you should
if you have any doubts, ask the doctor what he is suspecting
then you can do your own research
and maybe decide for ypurself
to me
looking at th few details you have given
it sounds like a bowel problem
and a couple of childhood bowel problems do need surgery

Trust your pediatrician. your child has a real problem that needs to be corrected as soon as possible. the test will be unpleasant but may save her a life time of pain.
