Angels are New World cichlids, as are oscars. Oscars are generally more aggressive than angels, that is the reason they won't work in all but a very large tank. A larger tank gives more room for territory.
There are plenty of cichlids more aggresive than oscars, some oscars are real mellow and do fine with angels. All cichlids tend to have a different personality & aggressivness level from fish to fish, Some angels are laid back, others are real aggressive. The same goes for oscars. When you get to pike or wolf cichlids, they are pure aggression, often claiming territory outside their tank.

No they are not of the cichlid family. Oscars are very aggressive fish even toward ornaments. I have had Oscars for years. What you can try if you want depending on the size of your Oscars and if they have tasted live food; Put other fish of a comparable size into the Tank first and then add the Oscars. As long as they well fed they will sometimes, not always, ignore the fish that were in the Tank first. This how I introduce an Algae Eater into my Tank without my Oscars eating them. The Oscars I have now are about 8 inches with a Chinese Algae Eater that about three inches. I have not given live food. May not as they eat about everything I do from Hamburger to Eggs and Green Beans. I not give them anything that may be hard, only softer foods.

Yes they are. http://animal-world.com/encyclo/fresh/cichlid/cichlids.htm
You can't put them together for the same reason you can't put a German blue ram in with a flowerhorn. Just because they are cichlids doesn't make them compatible. There are varying levels of aggression. Angels are semi-aggressive. If you have ever kept them you would observe common cichlid behavior. Locking jaws, shaking, they are also territorial. They do well with Rams which are also cichlids.http://www.timstropicals.com/Inventory/Dwarf/RamInfo.asp

Cichlids (pronounced “sick-lids”) are fishes from the family Cichlidae in the order Perciformes. The family Cichlidae, a major family of perciform fish, is both large and diverse. It includes some 2500 species, in sizes that range from ca. 2.5 cm (e.g. some small Neolamprologus species and Apistogramma) to close to a metre (Boulengerochromis and Cichla, Parachromis dovii being the largest), and with morphologies ranging from highly compressed (eg. Altolamprologus, Pterophyllum and Symphysodon) to extremely elongated (eg. Teleogramma, Teleocichla, Crenicichla and Gobiocichla).
Some species, particularly Tilapia spp. are important food fishes, while many others are valued aquarium fishes (see cichlids as aquarium fish).
Characteristics of cichlids
The common features of cichlids include:
a single nostril on each side of the forhead instead of two (a characteristic they share only with damselfish)
an interrupted lateral line organ (except for genera Teleogramma and Gobiocichla)
a distinctive shape of one of the otoliths
the small intestine leaves the stomach from its left side, not from its right side as in other fish.
the presence of teeth in both the jaws and in the throat.
Range
Cichlids are mainly freshwater fish and inhabit most of the Neotropics and the Paleotropics from southern Texas southward to most of South America, Africa, Madagascar and the islands of Cuba and Hispaniola. A number of species are commonly found in brackish water of varying salinities. A few species of cichlids are found in Palestine, Israel, Iran and southern India and Sri Lanka. In Africa cichlids are widespread, occurring in the rift lakes (Lake Malawi, Lake Tanganyika), and virtually all other natural lakes and riverine habitats.
Diet
Diets are also diverse: generalized predators, plankton-feeders, herbivores, piscivores, scale-eaters, spongivores, fin eaters, insectivores, molluscivores, detritivores, and paedophores (eat other species' eggs or young). Scientists believe it is this wide adaptability of feeding styles that has helped cichlids to inhabit such a wide range of habitats. It is largely the pharyngeal teeth (teeth in the throat) that allows the cichlid so many 'niche' feeding behaviors, i.e. the jaws may be used to hold or pick food, while the pharyngeal teeth are used to crush what was harvested.
Astronotus is a genus of fish from the family Cichlidae. The genus is one of three genera which make up the tribe Chaetobranchini. There are two species in the genus (listed below) both of which are found in riverine South America. Astronotus species grow to 35 cm in size, and are monomorphic. They are opportunistic omnivores and consume a range of smaller fish, crustaceans, mollusks and other invertebrates in the wild. The species are mostly found in the tropics.
One species, Astronotus ocellatus, is popular in the aquarium trade where it goes under the trade name of the "Oscar". A. ocellatus forms monogamous pairs which spawn in the open, typically on a flattened stone or in a shallow depression. The juvenile colouration is different to that of the adult and may aid in camouflage of the fry.
In contrast, A. crassipinnis is rarely exported and is not seen often in the aquarium trade.

Angelfish are not cichlids, however they are from the same waters as the south American cichilds.
Oscars do not dwell well with any other fish because they are sooooo agressive. Most oscars will not live with other oscars unless you have a bunch of them.
