We have had a lot of rain recently, but this is a slow moving river. There is a lot of vegetation around it too. How can the mosquito population be controlled, without destroying the surrounding houses or poisoning the river? The mosquito population has EXPLODED recently!

Yow! Malathion is a powerful carcinogen. I wasn't aware that it was even available to private individuals. Please don't use it; it is unsafe and highly toxic!

Bat boxes are the best natural solution, but it's too late this year. It takes about a year for bats to find and occupy them. If you build your own, do it right for best results. Males and females prefer separate quarters - a big box for the females, a narrower one for the males. Research how and where to place them. Or order from Coveside Conservation (coveside.com). One bat will eat 3000-5000 insects a night. Think of it!

I have a water garden and a birdbath and we have had heavy rains in Maine this year, but I've had bat boxes on the barn for years and have not had a mosquito bite since I can't remember when!

I would contact your local fish and game and see what they recommend. Mosquito fish might just do the trick. Your area might have an mosquito abatement district as well. Until you get help do not wear dark colors and consider repellent.

Spray malithiaon every morning. Spray all bushes and plants heavily. Do NOT spray ferns! If your house is not on a slab, spray under the house through the vents. Yes, it is a lot of work, but it does work. I used to live in the country with rice fields on two sides of my house. I sat outside on the swing every evening, but I had to spray every morning.

Use an ultrasonic repeller

or (one of my hippie friends did this) build some bat-boxes (housing for bats)- if you can get bats to move in, they eat their own body weight in mosquitoes every night.
