I want out but he is still hanging around waiting for things to get better between us.

1)Lasso the one who is running away.
2)Go after the one who is hanging around & tell him things will get better (while brandishing a knife and holding some rope).

Well if he doesn't go and you want him gone then I guess you're not making the point clear enough for him to understand and If he keeps bothering you after you told him you're not interested in working thing out, then he's "stalking" you and there are laws against it! I think the person running away doesn't want to get caught in the middle! Fix the mess you're in first and then chase after the one running away from you and remember if he keeps on running he doesn't want you to catch him ! Got to let him go!

You arn't real clear.
But, you do need to realize that you can't control any person but your self. If you are sure that you don't want the guy around, what is the problem? Don't answer his calls. Avoid being in the same place at the same tme. He is hanging around it is becasue you are letting him.
Be firm. Make your NO mean NO.
You are letting him hang on.
