"What do you have to have to be a successful journalist? And can you give me some useful tips. Thank you all!!"

superbooks.org ANSWERS:

I need to know more of this question in order to answer it properly.

1. You mention that you want to be a succesful journalist but don't mention the paper that you want to write for. This is good. Because some of the most successful journalists do not write for any one particular newspaper.

2. You can be a successful journalist on any of the blogger sites if you are serious about writing. There are hundreds of places where you can tell your story, whether true or not. (Yes, there are two kinds of journalists -one prints the truth and the other prints whatever they feel will sell for good money.

3. ALL YOU NEED is a great desire to write, and good life experience and patience. If you are serious about writing , then you'll be writing every day, every month all the time IF you are serious about writing . You need to get exposure for your writing.

YES< for the mainstream papers, like The New York Times, my guess is that this paper and some others must require some kind of a college degree with a focus on writing, putlishing , etc.

But to begin with the smaller local papers where you live, you probably just need a scoop to get started. Having pictures for your stories always helps.

You should ask a guidance counselor at your school if you go to school --where a good place is to get started on the field of journalism ...

If you speak with experts, you'lll most likely get good result.

And, if you are going to be a journalist and you want your material published, get the book from the library called, "Writers Market 2007.

This book will help you with lots of inside information about pubishing , writing and anything related to the publisher.

There are some sites you can begin with and practice your writing in:

opendiary.com
writersmarket.com
freeservers.com (you can make your own free website here) .
goto any BLOGG site and begin writing your heart out .
BUT put this blogg on PRIVATE, so on ly you can see your writing while you are online.

It helps to know people also. So, if you know any publisher, or any writer or corporation , tell them what you are interested in. Perhaps they can help you in the future .

First, make sure your writing skills are up to snuff: your spelling; grammar; punctuation; word usage. Don't use too many words; don't use words "everybody" else uses.

Believe that you can do it! Have a curious mind and an openness to meeting people, listening to their "stories," to exploring the area in which you live, and the attitude that you never know if a story will be boring until you dig into it a bit.

I applied for a job as freelance writer, doing a weekly newspaper human interest column. Had never been paid to write in my life. Don't know how many other applicants there were, but I got it; have been at it almost a year, and am loving it!

Get emails from strangers making comments, asking questions. Have been introduced into the "networking" system in my town and been given hints on whom to talk to, etc.

Best and most exciting writing experience so far in my life!

Have confidence and just try. Take courses if need be; I never did, but apparently my editors are satisfied with me anyhow!! I had some Creative Writing courses but never any journalism ones.

You have to be very curious about what happens around you, to ask a lot of questions, to be creative, to have 'guts',to know your language very well and to have a newspaper or a magazine where to write. Can be a small one but you have to start from somewhere.
