I think "Leader" is the new politically correct term for the old "manager" title - so I don't think there is any difference...it all comes down to a fancy name for *babysitter*

In a normal job you should follow the leader, do what he does; but if you stand around with your hands in your pockets like a manager you'll probably get fired. A leader is often a worker bee that did a lot of things better than other worker bee's, so is advanced to leader status so everyone else will use his better ways. This leader may advance again to be a manager. Managers have a lot of responsibilities besides knowing how to do the job. Many companies actually require higher levels of education before people can move into management. If your leader moves to management he may still be able to lead you, but he may also have responsibility for other areas where he doesn't have that lower level skill. Management may need to know about things like pay, benefits, etc.

Leadership is bringing the organization together and uniting under similar goals; management is ensuring that the leadership's goals are achieved. Leadership is the WHAT; management is the HOW.

Management should incorporate leadership, however it often does not. Anyone can assume a position of leadership, one must be appointed to a position of management. They should carry the same qualities though.

In management, you deal with the details. In leadership, you deal with "the big picture".
Stephen Covey says, you manage from left-it means left brain-but you lead from right-it means right brain. You manage things, but you lead people.
A leader is usually perceived as a brave and charismatic person-such as Jack Welch or Napoleon-but a manager usually perceived as a calm, prudent, and meticulous person.
However, I think leadership and management are twins with different characters.

Management is generally responsible for daily activities and ensuring production quotas are met. Leadership is looking at the bigger picture of the company, usually trying to increase business by looking for the next idea.

Leadership is what you do with critical thinking and actions based on your own decisions. Management is what you do when you follow a previously ordained structure to make decisions without taking any personal risk. (also called plausible deniability)
Leadership is what Burt Rutan does. Management is what NASA does.
