It really depends on the situation because if the parents are druggies and to say that to some body's child it is very negative. But to say that to somebody that is successful well then you know its more a compliment. Anyways it just means that kids follow their parents.

and an acorn doesn't fall far from the oak....it's like the apple tree is the parent .and the apples are their children.....if the children act..are..alot like the parents....well..you get it...it has a negative connotation.....people who say it are usually rolling their eyeballs...it's not meant to be a compliment
