and you decide to take some time from the relationship, than does that still mean you're still obligated to talking to them and all the other things? what is a "break" for really? are you supposed to "wait" on each other? and is it okay in the waiting process to have "other" people in your life?

I'm going to get a little side tracked from your question and say that I think a break is a horrible concept. I can see maybe two people taking a break for a night. One person staying at home the other going to stay at a friends house. I think that taking a 'break from the relationship' is just a way of breaking up without saying so or a horrible way of trying to patch things up. All it does is add complications. BUT since you are on a break: Those terms are really for you two to decide. I've seen people take breaks simply to have a bit of time to themselves and I've seen people take breaks while they tested the water with others. Good luck with the 'break'.

Update: I understand that you both have a lot going on. I wonder who initiated the break? Has your relationship run it's course and one of you has suggested a break as opposed to just saying what you both know is an inevitable break up? Maybe it's not. I'm just saying that's what it sounds like. I hope however it works out the both of you are happy. As happy as you can be anyways.

I think that usually a break is a way of looking for someone else without actually saying that you want out of the relationship. Usually people are unhappy with each other when they want a break. I wouldn't wait and I would try to find someone else.

If you go on a break in a relationship...that means that you both are not mature enough to have a relationship....you can't work it out.....so move on and break it off completely!! Sorry, and Good Luck....
