I am almost 3 months post-partum. 2 weeks ago I began my period and a few days later had an IUD administered. Since then I haven't stopped bleeding for more than a day at a time. It comes and goes. I am concerned because I don't know if I am bleeding bc of my period or bc of the IUD, I can't afford to go to the doc's til the IUD check-up (the last one Medicaid will pay for) I want to know how long your first period after baby lasted, just so I can get a feel for it. Also if you could share any advice or tips you have for me in this dept, I would appreciate it!

There can be some bleeding from the IUD insertion, but it shouldn't last more than a couple of days.

Having an IUD also can make your periods last longer and be heavier than normal... often with more cramping than usual too.

Sometimes, after delivering a baby, it takes quite a while for your period to get back to its normal schedule so you may have had a back to back period, jumpstarted by the IUD, but I'd at least call the doctor and let him/her know about what's happening.

Are you feeling any pain or faintness? Some rare cases of IUD insertion can perforate the lining of the uterus and can cause bleeding which would need medical attention immediately.

If your next appointment isn't in the next few days, I would have it checked out.

I breastfed so I didn't even get my "first period" until about nine months after having my kids and they were very light at first... lasting about three days and slowly, each consecutive month, they progressed to a full five day period.

I have had two IUDs and three kids.... now I have a tubal ligatiion and LOVE IT!!!!

Good luck... I hope everything is ok.

I have heard that you can cramp and spot for a little while after insertion of an IUD. Can I ask which one you have? I am about to get the Mirena IUD in a week and I heard that with that one you won't bleed very much or have no period or at all. With the copper IUD, I have heard that you will bleed very heavily on it. If the bleeding doesn't stop in a week I would go to a doctor. Can you go to the local health department or family planning. They should be able to help you for very cheap or free.

The baby postpartum should have stopped. As you said you have had a period since then. I think there is a complication with the IUD however I have never had one and am not sure of the side effects of one.

I do think you need to see a doctor, this off and on bleeding is not a good sign, maybe your IUD is not in properly. You might just phone and ask the nruse if it is normal for you to bleed all the time. I am sure they will be concerned that the doc has not fitted it properly and will refit you for nothing.
Good Luck

Mine did. And concerning to the 1st 5 classes have been particularly heavy, yet they only lasted like an afternoon and a one million/2 which exchange into staggering! yet now, 6 months later, they're lower back to what they have been pre-toddler.
