I was walking around and I got a sudden backache in my upper back. It felt like a tightness between my shoulder blades and ribs. I couldn't take a deep breath and it felt like a stabbing pain. It lasted for about a half an hour and now I still have a dullbackache..and my ribs hurt! 6 hours later. Anyone got any ideas what it might be? I was thinking a pulled muscle or mabye air trapped somewhere? I really doubt a heart attack! Any input would be greatly appreciated!

A stroke implies there was a blood shortage to the brain. None of the symptoms you described are consistent with a stroke. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stroke#Signs_and_symptoms

I'm not an expert but to me it sounds like a pinched nerve. Had you done anything in the last day or so? Worked out? lifted things? spent hours hunched over a desk? (I injured my rhomboid muscle and pinched a nerve somewhere in that area while scrapbooking).
Not sure that the hurting ribs would be a sign of a pinched nerve, though. But I do know after the original pain is gone, the area aches for awhile.
Aabout halfway down the page it describes what a pinched nerve might feel like: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nerve
Hope I helped a little.
You may want to put a heating pad on it to help with the soreness if it's really bothering you.

I've had sharp pains like that before, but they come and go quickly. They didn't last as long as yours. Were you doing anything active when it occurred? It's pretty hard to pull a muscle in that area without doing something strenuous. I get pains in my upper back when I get a bad cold or bronchitis. Are you coughing at all or having trouble breathing? If it's still there later, you may want to see your doctor!

Yes it has happened to me, it occurs probably every few years.
I don't know what causes it, but its quite scary. Doctor thinks I pulled a muscle without realizing it, because everything is fine with my ribs, lungs and heart. It might not happen again to you for a long time, however if it comes back very soon, go straight to emerg because that's the only time they can find something, as it actually happens.

That happens to me sometimes....well kind of. Just like suddenly, I get these sharp pains in my rips and I can hardly breath, let a lone take a deep breath, without there being a sharp pain. It only lasts for a few seconds though. I think you should go to the doctor, to get it checked out though. It could be something serious.

actually i get that all the time. It is a pulled muscle. Next time it happens lay down on a hard surface and put your hands above your head. It will alleviate the pain within 30 minutes. It works every time for me.

Yeah occurred to me plenty, also what Massy stated. at the same time as this stuff happen numerous cases to many people, i don't believe of there are twist of destiny, yet i don't believe in any superstitious concept besides. I recommend technology could coach it. And in accordance to my observations there is something about it that calls for clinical examinations and study.
