It depends on the job, for most it would be 18, but for some jobs you can work younger with your parents permission.
Baby sitting I think 14-15, stocking in a supermarket 16-17.
I had jobs at 14 and up, but some I could only work part time due to child labor laws and school/parent work permission..but that was back in the 1980's, things might have changed.
Also I grew up in the country, and could always find a farmer who needed help when my dad didn't need me on our own farm. On the farm age didn't matter so much as a strong back. :-)

It depends on what kind of job and what managerial level:
For entry level, generally companies require applicants under 30. For middle-managerial levels, perhaps between 35-45 depends on the company. Newly established factories or branches or companies need mature and experienced employees.
For top-managerial levels between 45-55. Some companies are willing to employ above-55 for this level, but usually people get retired after 60 because of their health condition.
People who work as a "thinker"-such as lecturer-or "self-employee"-such as doctor-perhaps can work in older ages, but however, they will get retired too.
These criteria can vary in different countries.
The most important thing is never wasting your time doing nothing (I mean become a jobless). If you have to lose your job, try to find a new one, learn new things, or do anything else, but never ever let your time fly away. That's what my parents says.
