The house would go to whoever you will it to or your nearest kin if you have no will and if you have no kin, whatsoever, the government will auction it off. Even if you have a will or kin, the government and/or your creditors could sell the house to pay off any debts you have (other than the mortgage, obviously).
The government can take your house away, whether you're dead or not, using eminent domain.

Probate court publicly takes care of through a court appointed administrator who would if you had no will, or arrangemnets of any kind (trusts, etc.) The Administrator will probably put the house up for sale. If you have children, make the house is homesteaded and if the mortgage isn't yet paid for the money will be there to be pay the house off.

If you died without a will, or without direct heirs, there is no claim to the property, and the government could take the house. Also, it would be difficult to pay the taxes after you are dead.

That's why you need a will. If you're dead, you won't be paying taxes. Yes, they'll take the house if you don't have an heir or something to tell them your wishes. They're not going to just let a house sit there.

Yes...it's called eminent domain. They can take your house, even if you're still alive...of course, they'd generally pay for it.
