I mean is it that the wild card plays against the team that has the least wins of the other three? or do they play the best?

Why does the worst of the four teams get to play the best of the four? Is it to eliminate the wild card so soon? It doesn't make sense why they would do it that way but ok.

Last year, the Red Sox won the American League Wild Card and went onto play the White Sox, who had the best record in the American League. The Astros won the National League Wild Card and went onto play the Braves...who had the best record in the National League outside of their division. The Cardinals actually had the best record, but you can't play a team from the same division. So basically, the wild card team goes onto play the best team outside of their division.

The WIld Card WInner is the team with the best record that is not a divisional winner. They usually play the team with the best record UNLESS, the wild card team is from the same division of the team with the best record. Look at the 2005 NL season.
The Division winners were the Padres, Braves, and Cardinals. The Cardinals had the best record, and the Houston Astros won the Wild Card, but they ended up playing the Atlanta Braves who had the second best record in the NL.
Yup, the Astros ended up defeating the Braves in four games, 3-1.

I can say I was there for game four vs the Braves. all 18 freaking hours of it.

Then they went on to beat the Cardinals in Six.

and then we got our asses kicked by the white sox.

The wild card team is the best team in each league that is not at the top of their division. Although some wild card teams have better records that teams that win the division, they only make it as the wild card team. I believe they play against the best team.

The team the wild card plays in the first round is the team with the best regular season record.
