The trees that are close together are bare where they meet and others are bare in the center. We don't want to lose these trees are we too late to save them and what is the best method? We live in central Indiana.
Thank you.

Tie old rags to the end of an old mop handle. Soak it in kerosene. Light it. if you use kerosene, you can torch the bags without torching the tree. I have done it without any mishap, but I always kept a running water hose -- just in case.

Do you mean tent caterpillars? They build ugly white or grey nests in trees out of thin fibers that look like zillions of spider web strands all together in a clump?

If so, use a hose with the nozzle set to a hard strong stream, and shoot it into the nests. A college biology instructor said it was the quickest and easiest way to get rid of them. They tend to climb up anything that they land on. If they land on the grass, the climb the stalks, and then the birds get them.
