He needs to carefully cut the heads of the screws off with a sharp cold chisel and pull the door loose. With the door out, he should be able to grab the screw shanks with vise-grips and yank them out.

This sounds like the wood behind the screws is stripped out... and not the screw heads themselves.....

I like to use a small putty knife -- slip it under the screw head, and give a gentle twist, as I start to back out the screw. Keep pressure on the screw with the putty knife, and the screw will actually use the putty knife to remove itself. Ive had this problem with a lot of storm doors, and this works pretty well.

If the head of the screw itself was damaged, I'd recommend a screw "extractor", which you can find at Sears, Lowe's, etc. It looks similar to a drill bit, but the point is actually serrated counter-clockwise... so it will grip what remains of the screw head. These run for about $20 at most places, and come in a package with at least 3 sizes.

Once he has the screws removed.... your husband can take some small dowels, or even toothpicks... and a little glue...squirt some glue into the hole, and hammer in the dowel, or toothpicks. Clip them with a good pair of snips, or cutters, if necessary, so that they do not stick beyond the surface...hammer them flat, and let the glue dry. IF you happen to have a screw hole match up with an existing hole, now... the new screw will have something to grip.

Have Fun!

u mean the screws in the wood just turn?? put a knife or screw driver under the head and THEN turnwhile putting upwards pressure on the head,, if not try to pry them out,, then use a little larger drill and enlarge the screw holes,, glue in appropriate sized wooden dowels, cut flush, pre-drill and install screws!!

Neddle nose vise grips, WD40 and/ or wire cutters. Use the wirecutters like this: have 1 jaw biting the inside of the screw, the other jaw biting the outside of the screw.
